How to design a BESS site layout
Step-by-step guide to designing a battery energy storage system site layout — from finding your site to exporting a finished layout.
A complete BESS site layout — DC blocks, PCS skids, E-house, roads, fencing, clearances — in under five minutes. This guide walks through each step.
1. Find your site
Open the layout tool and search for an address, paste coordinates, or zoom the satellite map to your site. The tool works anywhere in the world.
2. Draw the boundary
Tap to place boundary points around your parcel. The polygon defines the buildable area — everything the solver places will stay inside it. Close the boundary by tapping the first point again, or press Confirm.
Vertices are draggable after placement. On mobile, long-press a vertex to move it.
3. Review the layout
The solver runs automatically. Within seconds, you see a complete layout: DC blocks, PCS & MV skids, E-house, access roads, security fence, and vehicle gate — placed to maximize energy density under the configured spacing rules.
The info panel shows the key numbers: total MW, MWh, DC block count, PCS count, and site area.
4. Tune the configuration
Every input re-solves the entire layout. Nothing is patched — each change produces a fresh optimized result.
- POI — slide to reposition the grid connection point. The E-house follows.
- Gate — slide to move the vehicle gate around the fence perimeter.
- DC block config — choose a DC block model and stacking configuration (2×2, 2×1, 1×1, or Auto).
- PCS config — select a PCS & MV skid format (20 ft, 40 ft, or Auto).
- BESS section — force a specific section configuration, or let the solver choose.
- E-house — change the format, or drag it on the map to pin its position.
- Roads — switch between perimeter ring, drive-through, or no internal roads.
- Site details — adjust safety distance, boundary setback, road width, and other spacing parameters.
5. Regenerate variants
Press Regenerate to cycle through the solver's top candidates. Each variant is a genuinely different layout — different orientations, section arrangements, or road configurations — not a random reshuffle. The button shows your position (e.g. "Regenerate 2/5").
6. Export the result
Press Export to download your layout:
- PNG — a map image with the layout overlaid. Free plan includes a watermark; Pro exports are clean.
- PDF (Pro) — a presentation-ready document with a title block showing the logo, MW, MWh, equipment counts, and site area.
On mobile, Export opens the native share sheet — save to Photos, AirDrop, or send directly.
7. Save and share
Pro users can Save a layout and reopen it later at the same URL. Share the link with colleagues — they see the exact layout and configuration you saved.
